First

I am not the first to find love

or to have felt hatred

to be lost and then found

cry only to laugh uncontrollably

have the answer and then know nothing at all

ask why, then understand

stand strong while losing ground

sin

beg for mercy

find determination amongst discouragement

remember to forget

bear witness while ignoring others

be afraid to be brave

then be brave while feeling afraid

show gratitude

throw stones

smile through the bruising

find redemption

I wont be the last

Dear

We lead with you

and follow with the names of those

we love, pour our secrets into diaries after you

begin our letters to legends, or fabled visitors with you

We formally address those we don’t know

and speak to someone named “John” when we

fall out of love

We call out to you to make sure

you are near, while climbing over life’s

obstacles pleading for you

We look for you in the dark,  stay

surprised by you.  Witness happiness

with you, sadness too

We preface you with two letter words

Championing the good displayed by people

Scrutinizing the horror displayed by people

We beg for mercy with you

Pray to the divine with you

Begin with

End with

Dear

Still

stillness

I entered the room

your still shrinking body was dwarfed by the bed

clinically white save but for your mauve shawl

which played with the silver of your hair

and the light of day streaming in from the window

You spied one eye open

and held your hand out for mine

Cold hands, warm hearts

We talked about you

your dreams and the visitors

from the past and the present

You knew and so did I that

this was our time, albeit limited

Life is an accumulation

of connected moments

I was grateful for the connection

felt blessed to bear witness

we sat holding hands

while the day faded

so did you

Hold

When holding hands

we place our hearts

carefully in the palms

of others, trusting that

their intentions

are honourable

We create solidarity

with a bond bound by faith

messages of hope

strength from fear

the happiness of joy

or the gift of love

Whether witnessed by many

or few, it matters not

for in that moment when

we offer our hand

we offer ourselves

vulnerable

I offer you mine

Hold tight.

Fall

Your slyness creeps in

turning collars up

hats tucked down

Lush lawns sport new dews

trees play with colour

bearing the fruit of the season

Brisk walking replaces Summer’s saunter

and we turn our gaze to the sun

while still warm,  is losing it’s luster

The haze of the sky gives way to a true blue

crisp clouds breeze by

on the tails of cooler winds

We begin to dream and dress in warmer tones

Candles are lit and fires are kindled

energizing our senses while we cozy our nests

We bottle, bake and freeze giving thanks

for Summer’s bounty

the bedding of gardens and cutting of eager bushes

necessitates the switch of seasonal tools

We bow to natures shedding

bending and raking

Witnessing our morning’s breath

we wait,  while you make up your mind

how fair you will play

your Fall game
